About this tool

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement in the United States and many other countries. The most common scale is 4.0, where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Some schools add +/- modifiers (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.).

This calculator supports three modes: (1) Semester GPA — enter grades and credit hours for a single term; (2) Cumulative GPA — combine multiple semesters into an overall GPA; (3) Weighted GPA — applies weight multipliers for honors (4.5 scale), AP/IB (5.0 scale), and dual enrollment courses. The formula is: GPA = Sum(Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours.

Whether you are a high school student planning college applications, a college student tracking progress toward graduation, or a graduate school applicant calculating your competitive GPA, this tool provides accurate results based on standard US grading scales. All data stays in your browser.

Practical Usage Examples

Calculate semester GPA

Calculate GPA for 4 courses with different grades and credits.

Math (A, 4 credits) = 16 points
English (B+, 3 credits) = 9.9 points
History (A-, 3 credits) = 11.1 points
Science (B, 4 credits) = 12 points
Total: 49 points ÷ 14 credits = 3.50 GPA

Calculate cumulative GPA

Combine previous GPA with current semester.

Previous: 3.2 GPA with 45 credits (144 points)
Current: 3.8 GPA with 15 credits (57 points)
Cumulative: 201 points ÷ 60 credits = 3.35 GPA

Calculate required grade for target GPA

Need 3.5 GPA overall - what grade needed in 3-credit course?

Current: 3.4 GPA with 57 credits (193.8 points)
Target: 3.5 GPA with 60 credits (210 points)
Need: 16.2 points ÷ 3 credits = A- or higher

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours. Quality Points = Grade Value x Credit Hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12.0 quality points. Sum all quality points and divide by total credits.

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA gives extra points for advanced courses: honors courses use a 4.5 scale, AP/IB courses use a 5.0 scale. An A in an AP course is worth 5.0 instead of 4.0.

Requirements vary by institution. Competitive universities typically expect 3.5+ unweighted GPA. Ivy League schools often see 3.9+ GPAs. State universities may accept 2.5-3.0. Check each school specific requirements.

There is no universal conversion because grading scales differ. A common approximation: 4.0 = 93-100%, 3.7 = 90-92%, 3.3 = 87-89%, 3.0 = 83-86%, 2.7 = 80-82%, 2.3 = 77-79%, 2.0 = 73-76%. Some schools use different thresholds.
