What Shoe Size Converter Does

This shoe size converter translates a size between US men’s, US women’s, US kids’ (C and Y), UK adult and children’s, EU, and Japanese or Mondopoint sizes. Pick the system you know, enter the size, and every equivalent appears at once, along with the foot length that size is made for. You can also start from a measurement of your own foot.

Instead of copying one brand’s chart, the converter uses the sizing systems themselves: UK and US sizes step in barleycorns of ⅓ inch, EU sizes in Paris points of ⅔ cm, and Mondopoint and Japanese sizes give the foot length directly. The formulas are shown below, so you can see why a US men’s 9 comes out as a UK 8 and an EU 42.

How to Use Shoe Size Converter

  1. Choose Convert a size, or From foot length
  2. Pick the size system you know — US men’s, women’s or kids’, UK, EU or cm
  3. Enter your size, or your measured foot length in cm or inches
  4. Read the equivalent size in every system
  5. Check the men’s, women’s or kids’ chart for neighboring sizes

Formula Used by Shoe Size Converter

From size to last length

UK adult = 3L − 25 · US men’s and youth = 3L − 24 · US women’s = 3L − 22.5 · EU = 1.5 × L(cm)

L
Length of the last (the form the shoe is built on), in inches — or in cm for EU
⅓ inch
One UK or US size (a barleycorn)
⅔ cm
One EU size (a Paris point)

Worked example

A US men’s size 9.

  1. L = (9 + 24) ÷ 3 = 11 in = 27.94 cm
  2. UK = 3 × 11 − 25 = 8
  3. EU = 1.5 × 27.94 = 41.9
  4. US women’s = 9 + 1.5 = 10.5

Result: US men’s 9 = UK 8 = EU 42 = US women’s 10½.

From foot length (Brannock scale)

US men’s = 3 × foot length (in) − 22 · last ≈ foot length + ⅔ in

Worked example

A foot measuring 26.5 cm (10.43 in).

  1. Men’s: 3 × 10.43 − 22 = 9.3
  2. Women’s: 9.3 + 1.5 = 10.8
  3. EU: 1.5 × (26.5 + 1.69) = 42.3

Result: Men’s 9½, women’s 11, EU 42½ — sizes are rounded to the nearest half.

How to Read Your Result

Between two sizes?

If your foot falls between sizes, try the larger one — especially for running shoes and boots worn with thicker socks — and fine-tune with lacing or an insole. Feet swell during the day, so measure in the afternoon or evening, standing up.

Width matters too

Length is only part of the fit. In US sizing, medium width is D for men and B for women, and wide is E or EE for men and D for women. If a shoe pinches at the sides, a wider fitting in the same length usually works better than a longer size.

Brand differences

Each brand builds on its own lasts and publishes its own chart, and even one brand can fit differently between a running shoe and a boot. Use the conversion as a starting point, then check the brand’s chart and any fit notes on the product page.

Limitations & Accuracy Notes

  • Conversions follow the standard sizing formulas; individual brand charts can differ by half a size or more.
  • Only length is converted; widths are not.
  • Specialist footwear, such as cycling or climbing shoes, often runs on its own scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a US shoe size to EU?
EU sizes count the length of the shoe last in Paris points of ⅔ cm. A US men’s 9 is made on an 11-inch (27.9 cm) last, which is EU 41.9 — sold as 42, or 42.5 by some brands. As a rough rule, add about 33 to a US men’s size.
What is the difference between men’s and women’s shoe sizes?
On the common US scale, a women’s size is the men’s size plus 1½ for the same length, so a women’s 8½ equals a men’s 7. A less common industry scale adds 1 instead. UK sizes use one scale for men and women.
How do I find my shoe size from my foot length?
Measure from your heel to your longest toe. On the Brannock scale used in US shoe stores, men’s size = 3 × foot length in inches − 22, so a 10⅓-inch (26.2 cm) foot is a men’s 9 and a women’s 10½.
Is a UK shoe size the same as a US size?
No. UK sizes start counting one size later, so a US men’s size is one more than the UK size (US 9 = UK 8), and a US women’s size is about 2½ more (US women’s 8 = UK 5½). Some brands use a 2-size gap for women.
Why is my size different between brands?
Each brand makes shoes on its own lasts — the foot-shaped forms shoes are built around — and publishes its own chart. The same number can fit half a size or more differently between brands, or between a brand’s running shoes and boots.
What do C and Y mean in kids’ shoe sizes?
C sizes are for toddlers and little kids and run up to 13½C. The scale then restarts at 1Y (youth, or big kids) and continues to about 7Y. Youth sizes follow the men’s numbers, so 7Y is the same length as a men’s 7 — about a women’s 8½.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint (ISO 9407) labels footwear by foot length in millimeters, sometimes with foot width — 265/100 means a 265 mm foot that is 100 mm wide. Ski boots use it, and Japanese sizes are the same foot length given in centimeters.
