What Word Unscrambler Does
This word unscrambler takes a set of jumbled letters and finds every English word they can spell, from two-letter words up to anagrams that use all fifteen. Add up to three blank tiles with a question mark and it works out which letters the blanks must stand for. Results are grouped by length and show each word’s tile score, so the longest and highest-scoring plays are easy to spot.
The dictionary is SCOWL, the open word list used by spell checkers such as aspell and hunspell — about 111,000 words in American English once proper nouns, abbreviations and hyphenated entries are removed. SCOWL grades every word by how commonly it is used, from level 10 (the core everyday vocabulary) to level 70 (rare, technical or archaic). The “Common words only” filter uses that grading, which a plain word dump cannot offer.
All the matching runs in your browser. The word list downloads once when the page opens, and every search after that is instant and works offline.

How to Read Your Result
Reading the results
Words in bold are very common; gray words are rare. For a party game or a classroom puzzle, stick to the bold and normal words. For a tile game where any valid word scores, the rare ones are worth checking against your game’s own dictionary before playing them.
Getting more from blank tiles
Each blank multiplies the number of possible words, often by ten or more, so start with one blank and add more only if you need to. When a word uses a blank, its tooltip says so and its score excludes that letter.
Limitations & Accuracy Notes
- SCOWL is not the official NWL or Collins tournament list; some words valid in competitive play are missing and a few words here would be challenged off the board.
- Proper nouns, abbreviations and words with apostrophes or hyphens are excluded.
- Scores ignore board premium squares and bingo bonuses — they are raw letter totals.
- Up to 15 letters and three blanks per search.
