🐕 Dog Age Calculator
Convert your dog’s age to human years with the 2020 epigenetic-clock formula and the veterinary rule of thumb — side by side, with a chart for every age.
Both modern methods agree the first two years count far more than later ones — a two-year-old is already a young adult.
| Dog age | Epigenetic | Vet rule | × 7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 yr | 31 | 15 | 7 |
| 2 yr | 42 | 24 | 14 |
| 3 yr | 49 | 29 | 21 |
| 4 yr | 53 | 34 | 28 |
| 5 yr | 57 | 39 | 35 |
| 6 yr | 60 | 44 | 42 |
| 8 yr | 64 | 54 | 56 |
| 10 yr | 68 | 64 | 70 |
| 12 yr | 71 | 74 | 84 |
| 14 yr | 73 | 84 | 98 |
| 16 yr | 75 | 94 | 112 |
What Dog Age Calculator Does
This dog age calculator converts your dog’s age into human years with two sourced methods side by side — the epigenetic clock from a 2020 study of dog DNA, and the veterinary rule of thumb — plus the old “multiply by 7” figure so you can see how far off it is. Enter years and months; the result updates as you type, and a table shows the same comparison for ages 1 to 16.
The methods disagree most in the first few years, and that is the point. Dogs race through puberty and physical maturity in their first year or two, so a 1-year-old dog is far closer to a young adult than to a 7-year-old child. After that, aging slows down relative to ours.
How to Use Dog Age Calculator
- Enter your dog’s age in years and months
- Compare the epigenetic-clock and vet-rule results
- See the old × 7 figure for comparison
- Use the table to see the equivalents at other ages
Formula Used by Dog Age Calculator
Epigenetic clock (Wang et al., 2020)
Human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
- ln
- Natural logarithm
Worked example
A 5-year-old dog.
- ln(5) = 1.609
- 16 × 1.609 = 25.75
- 25.75 + 31 = 56.75
Result: About 57 human years.
Veterinary rule of thumb (medium-sized dog)
Year 1 = 15 human years · year 2 = +9 · each year after = +5
Worked example
A 5-year-old dog.
- 15 + 9 = 24 at age 2
- 24 + 3 × 5 = 39
Result: 39 human years.

How to Read Your Result
Where the epigenetic formula comes from
Researchers at UC San Diego measured how DNA methylation — chemical tags on DNA that change with age — shifts over time in 104 Labrador retrievers and compared those changes with humans. Matching the patterns gave the logarithmic curve above, which also lines up milestones: puppy teething with human infancy, puberty, and typical lifespan.
Why the two methods disagree late in life
The epigenetic curve flattens because it was fitted on Labradors, a medium-to-large breed. The veterinary rule keeps adding 5 years because smaller dogs stay healthy longer. Neither is exact for your dog: breed, size and health all shift the real answer, which is why both are shown.
Senior years
Many veterinarians consider dogs senior from about 7, and large and giant breeds from 5 or 6. That is a good time to talk with your vet about twice-yearly checkups and bloodwork.
Limitations & Accuracy Notes
- The epigenetic formula was derived from Labrador retrievers only; the study authors note that other breeds may age on different curves.
- Neither method accounts for your dog’s individual size, breed or health.
- This is an estimate for curiosity and conversation, not a medical assessment — ask your veterinarian about age-related care.
